Dr. McGlennen: Tell me how do you use OralDNA\u00ae salivary diagnostics.<\/strong><\/p>\n Dr. Kildoo:<\/strong> We perform a MyPerioPath\u00ae on every patient with signs of periodontal disease.\u00a0 It gives us a more accurate diagnosis and helps us understand possible risk factors for other systemic diseases, such as Alzheimer\u2019s, diabetes and strokes. Recently, we have been sending the results to the patient\u2019s physician to help them understand the oral-systemic connection, too.<\/p>\n Dr. McGlennen: What has been the physician\u2019s reaction? <\/strong><\/p>\n Dr. Kildoo: <\/strong>Physician response has been slow, but we are working on it. By that, I mean that we have started visiting medical offices to educate them on our periodontal protocol and the oral-systemic connection. We have not given up hope. A co-managed approach to patient care needs to start somewhere.<\/p>\n Dr. McGlennen: What are the top two things to consider when you select a patient for testing? Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n Dr. Kildoo:<\/strong> Their periodontal and systemic health. We have discussed performing the test on every new patient, but we aren\u2019t quite there yet. Thus, we have reserved the MyPerioPath\u00ae for diagnosed periodontal patients only.<\/p>\n Dr. McGlennen:\u00a0 What are the biggest benefits to using salivary diagnostics?<\/strong><\/p>\n Dr. Kildoo:<\/strong> PROOF!\u00a0 We also use the results to adjust the treatment plan for the patient.<\/p>\n Dr. McGlennen: Can you provide an example of when you adjusted the therapy based on the results?<\/strong><\/p>\n Dr. Kildoo:<\/strong> \u00a0We had a patient that presented with a few 5mm pockets, generalized bleeding.\u00a0 If we had not performed a MyPerioPath\u00ae salivary diagnostic test, we most likely would have just performed limited scaling. However, when the results came back with evidence of significant high-risk bacterial pathogens, we not only scaled, but also utilized laser treatment, a course of systemic antibiotics and even localized antibiotics. (I.e. Arestin)<\/p>\n Dr. McGlennen: What is your favorite part of the MyPerioPath\u00ae test results? Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n Dr. Kildoo:<\/strong> It provides a visual for the patient; the science behind it helps them to understand their diagnosis and suggested treatment. And with the second test, the patient is able to see their personalized level of improvement.<\/p>\n Dr. McGlennen: How do your patients respond to this technology? What is their #1 question? <\/strong><\/p>\n Dr. Kildoo:<\/strong> They ask, \u201cHow will it affect treatment?\u201d and \u201cWhat is it going to show me?\u201d I explain that salivary diagnostics can help determine the cause of their periodontal inflammation, and find the best way to treat, especially if there are any oral-systemic connections!<\/p>\n Dr. McGlennen: If a patient is reluctant to test due to cost, how do you overcome this obstacle?<\/strong><\/p>\n Dr. Kildoo:<\/strong> Actually the cost of the tests is hardly ever discussed.\u00a0 We present it as a part of their periodontal therapy and we have a very high acceptance rate!<\/p>\n Dr. McGlennen: If a new OralDNA provider were to ask you for advice, what would be your best tip?<\/strong><\/p>\n Dr. Kildoo:<\/strong> Always include it as part of your treatment plan.\u00a0 Read the research and see how valuable salivary diagnostics is!<\/p>\n Dr. McGlennen: How do you stay current on the research?
