It is difficult to understand the resistance by dental professionals to test for the bacteria that cause gum disease. The excuses are numerous including, \u201cI\u2019ve always done it this way\u201d. A variation on this notion is \u201cWe were always taught\u201d. Other excuses shift the decision to the patients. \u201cMy patients won\u2019t accept it\u201d. Equally unsupported excuses include \u201cWe\u2019re already getting good results\u201d, or \u201cI don\u2019t need that\u201d, or \u201cWhat difference will it make?\u201d Claims of insufficient time are very common excuses, such as, \u201cWe already have too much to do\u201d, or \u201cWe don\u2019t have enough time\u201d. And even more insidiously, the blame is placed on others including, \u201cNone of my colleagues are doing it\u201d, or \u201cIf insurance doesn\u2019t cover it my patients won\u2019t have it done\u201d, or \u201cIt costs too much for my patients\u201d. And even more base is the claim that \u201cMy staff won\u2019t do it\u201d, or \u201cIt\u2019s too much trouble\u201d, or \u201cMy hygienist won\u2019t do it\u201d, or \u201cThe doctor won\u2019t do it\u201d, or, or, or, or, or.<\/p>\n
Set aside these excuses, which distance you from the responsibility of providing the best care. Look at the reasoning. Knowing the cause of disease, identifying the cause and acting on the combination of new information and experience is optimal. What the office is presently doing is not good enough. Certainly not for our patients.<\/p>\n
