Salivary Diagnostics: The Frontier Uniting Medical and Dental Professionals

Your saliva has a story to tell about your health. The oral microbiome can alter the balance between health and disease, locally and systemically. Within the oral cavity, bacteria, archaea, fungi, protozoa, and viruses may all be found, each having a particular role, but strongly interacting with each other and with the host, in sickness or in health. Early diagnosis of disease, quantification of disease, and prognosis of the treatment are vital steps in controlling and preventing the diseases that can and will change a person’s quality of life. Salivary diagnostics gives clinicians a chance to individualize treatment and provide biomarkers to watch for potential future health risks.

The National Network of Healthcare Hygienists (NNHH) is a professional membership organization of registered dental hygienists (RDH) who have a desire to see oral systemic disease prevention formally integrated into medical systems. As a group, we believe oral systemic health is suffering due to the current separation of dentistry and medicine, and we view ourselves as the bridge between the medical and dental silos.

NNHH is hosting a fall webinar on Friday, September 22, 2023 presented by Kriston Reisnour RDH, BSDH, CCSH, CSOM, FAAOSH. She will be discussing the importance of salivary diagnostics, when to test your patients, and will provide an elemental understanding of the laboratory process when analyzing saliva samples.  Please click here to register.
